26 good parenting tips

Raising kids today is arguably harder than ever before. But, there are some ways to help ease the stress and strain of raising your little ones and prevent behavior problems through good parenting.

1. Establish "together time" Establish a regular weekly routine for doing something special with your child -- even if it’s just going out for ice cream.

2. Don’t be afraid to ask where your kids are going and who they’ll be with. Get to know your kid’s friends -- and their parents -- so you’re familiar with their activities.

3. Try to be there after school when your child gets home. Eat together often. Meals are a great time to talk about the day and bond.

4. Be a better listener. Ask and encourage questions. Ask your kid’s input about family decisions. Showing your willingness to listen will make your child feel more comfortable about opening up to you. Don’t react in a way that will cut off further discussion. If your child says things that challenge or shock you, turn them into a calm discussion.

5. Be a living, day to day, example of your value system. Show the compassion, honesty, generosity and openness you want your child to have.

6. Know that there is no such thing as "do as I say, not as I do" when it comes to your kids.

7. Examine your own behavior.

8. Reward good behavior consistently and immediately. Expressions of love, appreciation, and thanks go a long way – even for kids who think themselves too old for hugs.

9. Accentuate the positive. Emphasize what your kid does right. Restrain the urge to be critical. Affection and respect will reinforce good (and change bad) behavior. Embarrassment or uneasiness won’t.

10. Create rules. Discuss in advance the consequences of breaking them. Don’t make empty threats or let the rule-breaker off easy. Don’t impose harsh or unexpected new punishments.

11. Set a curfew. Enforce it strictly, but be ready to negotiate on special occasions.

12. Have kids check in at regular times. Give them a phone card, change or even a pager, with clear rules for using it.

13. Call parents whose home is to be used for a party. On a party night, don’t be afraid to stop in to say hello (and make sure that adult supervision is in place).

14. Listen to your instincts. Don’t be afraid to intervene if your gut reaction tells you something’s wrong.

15. Let your children know how much you care in every situation you can, and especially when they are having problems.

16. Keep a positive attitude about your ability to be a parent. Trust your instincts.

17. Take care of yourself. Meet your needs for support with other adults so you can establish healthy parent-child boundaries.

18. Take time to teach your children values while they are young. Live your own values every day.

19. Make your home a safe, secure, and positive environment. Provide appropriate privacy for each family member.

20. Get involved in your child’s school, your neighborhood, and your community. You, not the teachers and other authority figures in your child’s life, are responsible for parenting your child.

21. Set clear rules and limits for your children. Be flexible and adjust the rules and limits as they grow and are able to set them for themselves.

22. Follow through with consequences for your children’s misbehavior. Be certain the consequences are immediate and relate to the misbehavior, not your anger.

23. Let your children take responsibility for their own actions. They will learn quickly if misbehavior results in unpleasant natural consequences.

24. Be a guide for your children. Offer to help with homework, in social situations, and with concerns about the future. Be there to help them direct and redirect their energy and to understand and express their feelings.

25. You are separate from your child. Let go of the responsibility for all of your children’s feelings or outcome of their decisions. Your children’ successes or failures are theirs, not yours.

26. Provide an environment for your children where a foundation of mutual appreciation, support, and respect is the basis of your relationship into their adult years.

10 ebay auction tips - Part 1

1. First principle to making money with auctions

Pivotal principle of making money with auctions:

Don't purchase any inventory unless you know that you can get your money back selling it.

It sounds like commonsense .... it is, but there's no limit to how good you can get at it; and better you are, the more money you make.

Refine your expertise of buying low and selling high to the 'nth degree - develop a reflex and six sense for finding the deal that turns a profit.

Become a master at steering clear of the bad deal ...

2. Best product around

Nothing is more integral to your success with auctions than good research...

Your goal is to uncover a source that few know about.

Find the best items to sell and start tracking them down.

Some items are consistently "HOT", designated by a flaming torch on eBay and various other symbols elsewhere.

Wouldn't it be great if you could see some of these items firsthand?

You can, visit this link:
http://listings.ebay.com/aw/listings/list/featured/index.html

And scan around. Look for a text link called, " going, going, gone..."

Some of the absolute best items on the internet are revealed right before your eyes - view the listings and find out what people want.

This also gives you a quick glance into any current consumer trends. Use this info to help you determine the kind of products you'd like to sell...

Remember to look for the flaming torch. 30 or more is good; very few make it this high. When you find a Dutch auction with this many bids, pay special attention.

People really want this item. And you should really want to sell it.

3. Goal of owning your own product.

Your goal should be: to own your own unique and successful product.

Something you have complete control over, something you spin out of your creativity. This isn't easy, but it's well worth your efforts.

Unfortunately, this is far from being the case starting out. You sell something others own. Meaning your profit is always much less than what it could be.

When you cut out the middlemen, profit comes much easier.

4. Best kinds of product to sell.

The less cumbersome the fulfillment process the better.

Anything that you can have drop-shipped is a good candidate.

Information products, i.e. CD's, software, books and ebooks have the best potential online - but you need to be the maker.

Profit margins are high since they are easily reproducible.

Second, fulfillment costs are nil.

Warning: competition is fierce selling information products on eBay - you can make money doing it, but their virtue is that it's a steppign stone away from auctions.

5. Short term goals for new sellers

If you are new on eBay, then concentrate on these 4 easy short term goals.

Get experience selling some items from around your house. It's a confidence builder and crucial experience.

Acquire some other items for resell from difference sources such as family, friends, flea markets, online venues and so on. This helps you develop research skill in locating auctionable products.

Obtain 50 positive feedbacks to get a gold star. People start to trust you and bid more. This gives you Dutch auction access. Strive to keep your feedback slate clean...

And find a niche you have a passion for. Take some time to think this one over. It's important to make certain it's the direction you want to go in advance...

6. Getting started accepting payments

High percentage of auction goers pay immediately. Convenient payment methods exist for you to exploit.

Let's focus with selling on eBay - it's the only one matters to most folks...

Here's what you'll need to have:
- Checking/savings account
- Paypal account
- Driver's license (for ID verify if you choose to do it)
- eBay account

If you have this, then you can accept these essential pay types that hook right up to your bank account:
- Paypal
- eBay Billpoint
- eBay Electronic Checks

If you have a feedback less than 10, you may want to get ID verified for $5. This allows you to accept popular "Buy Now" payments.

Almost all payments are paid with these methods - funds go right to your account.

You can actually have money streaming in just a few short days of your first auction, depending on auction duration.

7. Merchant account, do you need them?

If you plan on doing business a good deal via a website, then the answer is yes.

Otherwise, you can get by without them.

Remember, auctions are just a really great form of getting customers,a popular venue amongst many others.

If you plan on expanding and becoming successful, you must have them, here's why:
- You can process a customer's credit card manually
- You can take orders over the phone. The person can call in their information.
- You get a huge boost in credibility. People trust you more - this results in more post auction sales.
- You can process orders automatically and securely on your website. This is the biggest reason long term.
- You can take advantage of sales that other sellers miss. That means more money for you, but...

Don't rush out and commit to them until you see clearly that they are going to benefit you.

The more business that comes directly off the eBay site the less you need them. The ebay auction marketplace is supersaturated with competitive payment services...

If you want to do business outside of eBay in the future then you should look into it.

8. Profitable pain & painless profits

Be mindful of what you sell in temrs of the amoun of sheer physical effort you have to do, unless you are industrious Hercules or something.

You are the embodiment of every department - executive, advertising, fulfillment, accounting, and customer support...

As a human being, if you aren't careful, you can quickly approach your limits with this if you get semi-successful with it.

Selling bulky and obtuse odds and ends for meager amounts alongside continual searching for inventory, product fulfillment, customer concerns, paperwork, etc... quickly leads to eBay burnout.

Leave yourself enough space in your business to improve your process and acquire better and better things to sell.

And...

Pay close attention to the amount of profir per sale for certain items.

Profit margins need to be healthy enough to justify time being spent doing the work.

If you are selling material goods with low profit margins, then prepare to work your tail off to get anywhere.

Only if you are able to generate decent return can you expect to make a good living at selling.

9. Sell eveything approach

Do you have unbounded enthusiasm and little patience? If so, auction will suit you. Approach: buy everything that you could sell for a profit.

You want to develop a good sense for finding one -

It's a perfect way for a novice sellers to learn the ins-and-outs of the process.

10. Focused selling approach

Reckoning day came - laziness set in after the initiation. Either you make things simpler or face disappointing career options.

Focused selling means - selling a few related types of items in volume and selling them well and taking advantage of your customer base.

This is an advanced approach to making money with auctions - few sellers get to this point because they remain on the level of hobbyists.

But those who become focused do quite well for themselves.

12 tips for a better blogger

1) Find your voice: Being efficient at writing internal memos and technical manuals is a far cry from writing an interesting blog. It sometimes takes a bit of time for writers to find their true voice. Be patient and practice by writing -- even if it's not to be published on a blog -- and most importantly make sure you observe the next point.

2) Be yourself: Don't put on airs or try to be someone you're not. Inexperienced writers tend to fall prey to one of two extremes: They either try too hard to be clever and end up falling short (writing humor is a fine art!) or are so serious that they sound like something hatched out of a robotics laboratory.

3) Write naturally: When writing a blog entry imagine that you're speaking to someone (unless it's a very formal or official blog). For instance, the use of contractions will help make your blog sound more natural and in tune with the way most people talk. Also, avoid trying to be overly literary if you don't have the writing skills yet. I've read some blogs where writers try so hard to be visual that they end up using five adjectives in a single sentence, or string an entire paragraph together by starting every sentence with a conjunction.

4) Be creative: It's perfectly all right -- and preferable to many readers -- to inject a bit of creativity and humor into your blog (if you know how to do it properly). Even when working on an internal corporate blog, it doesn't mean you have to write like an undertaker -- unless the topic is very serious, which lead to the next point.

5) Match tone with subject: If you're discussing a very serious topic, don't crack jokes and make light of the matter or you'll end up trivializing the entry and damage your reputation as a blogger.

6) Don't be afraid to express your opinions (when appropriate): Timid writers sit on the fence and don't want to move for fear of leaning to any one side. If you're an expert in a field or industry, readers will come to your blog expressly to read about what you have to say -- so say it loud and proud!

7) Stick to your convictions: If what you wrote in a blog entry is truly what you believe, stand behind your words. It's all right to admit your mistakes if you truly did make a mistake (readers will respect you more if you do so rather than stubbornly argue something that has already been proven false), but don't cave in just because what you wrote causes a stir among the readers.

8) Learn by reading other blogs: Find out how other bloggers are using the tool and get a feel for different writers' styles. The purpose here isn't to imitate, but to help you find your own blogger voice.

9) Make a connection with the readers: Don't be afraid to write in first- and second-person perspective. Addressing the reader directly helps to form a connection. For example, "I believe that you can learn a lot by doing" sounds more conversational and natural than "One can learn a lot by doing."

10) Give readers something unique: If there are already five blogs about a particular subject within your company, it doesn't need a sixth. If you insist on covering an area that's already being blogged about, find a different angle to cover. Readers will rarely read multiple blogs about the same subject unless you offer something unique that other bloggers of the same subject don't.

11) Don't make entries too long: Keep in mind that readers might not always have the time to read long blog entries. If the topic you're writing about requires a lot of coverage and isn't time sensitive, break it up into multiple parts. This will get readers used to coming back to your blog or subscribing if it's offered as an RSS feed.

12) Develop thick skin: Try not to take overly critical or negative comments too personally; learn from them. This is discussed more in the next section.

Dealing with Feedback

One of the first things I learned as a writer is that you will never make everyone happy. But that was never my intention, and nor should it be yours. I've had readers complain that a particular article focused too much on technology (even though written for an IT publication for an IT audience), while others complained that the very same story wasn't technologically oriented enough. Well, I guess in some cases, you can't make anyone happy.

If you allow readers to leave comments on your blog, be prepared to deal with a certain amount of negative feedback. Some readers will provide intelligently written constructive criticism and will be open to discussion; some will have little-to-nothing productive to say and will attack you simply for the sake of raising hell; and some will miss the point entirely.

It's an unfortunate aspect of human nature that readers will be more likely to express disapproval than satisfaction. Readers who enjoy a story might not always take the time to convey this fact, but if readers get a whiff of something they don't like in what you've written, a huge discussion thread will spring forth like a brush fire. While I believe that it's important to pay attention to your readers' feedback and comments, as a writer you can't allow them to dictate what and how you write.

The best advice I can give is not to take it too personally if you find yourself under attack. Never become overly defensive and respond to these attacks on emotion. If you do so, you could very well damage your reputation as a blogger and content provider. Don't get sucked into a bunch of yahoos' nonsense because that's precisely what they want. Next thing you know, all of your productive blogging time is wasted defending your work to people who just want to cause trouble. So if you ever find yourself under unwarranted attack remember this appropriate quote by Plato, "A wise man speaks because he has something to say; a fool speaks because he has to say something."

10 health tips

1. Move More
make it a daily challenge to find ways to move your body. Climb stairs if given a choice between that and escalators or elevators. Walk your dog; chase your kids; toss balls with friends, mow the lawn. Anything that moves your limbs is not only a fitness tool, it's a stress buster. Think 'move' in small increments of time. It doesn't have to be an hour in the gym or a 45-minute aerobic dance class or tai chi or kickboxing. But that's great when you're up to it. Meanwhile, move more. Thought for the day: Cha, Cha, Cha…. Then do it!

2. Cut Fat
Avoid the obvious such as fried foods, burgers and other fatty meats (i.e. pork, bacon, ham, salami, ribs and sausage). Dairy products such as cheese, cottage cheese, milk and cream should be eaten in low fat versions. Nuts and sandwich meats, mayonnaise, margarine, butter and sauces should be eaten in limited amounts. Most are available in lower fat versions such as substitute butter, fat free cheeses and mayonnaise.
Thought for the day: Lean, mean, fat-burning machine…. Then be one!

3. Quit Smoking
The jury is definitely in on this verdict. Ever since 1960 when the Surgeon General announced that smoking was harmful to your health, Americans have been reducing their use of tobacco products that kill. Just recently, we've seen a surge in smoking in adolescents and teens. Could it be the Hollywood influence? It seems the stars in every movie of late smoke cigarettes. Beware. Warn your children of the false romance or 'tough guy' stance of Hollywood smokers.
Thought for the day: Give up just one cigarette…. the next one.

4. Reduce Stress
Easier said than done, stress busters come in many forms. Some techniques recommended by experts are to think positive thoughts. Spend 30 minutes a day doing something you like. (i.e., Soak in a hot tub; walk on the beach or in a park; read a good book; visit a friend; play with your dog; listen to soothing music; watch a funny movie. Get a massage, a facial or a haircut. Meditate. Count to ten before losing your temper or getting aggravated. Avoid difficult people when possible.
Thought for the day: When seeing red, think pink clouds….then float on them.

5. Protect Yourself from Pollution
If you can't live in a smog-free environment, at least avoid smoke-filled rooms, high traffic areas, breathing in highway fumes and exercising near busy thoroughfares. Exercise outside when the smog rating is low. Exercise indoors in air conditioning when air quality is good. Plant lots of shrubbery in your yard. It's a good pollution and dirt from the street deterrent.
Thought for the day: 'Smoke gets in your eyes'…and your mouth, and your nose and your lungs as do pollutants….hum the tune daily.

6. Wear Your Seat Belt
Statistics show that seat belts add to longevity and help alleviate potential injuries in car crashes. Thought for the day: Buckle down and buckle up.

7. Floss Your Teeth
Recent studies make a direct connection between longevity and teeth flossing. Nobody knows exactly why. Perhaps it's because people who floss tend to be more health conscious than people who don't?
Thought for the day: Floss and be your body's boss.

8. Avoid Excessive Drinking
While recent studies show a glass of wine or one drink a day (two for men) can help protect against heart disease, more than that can cause other health problems such as liver and kidney disease and cancer.
Thought for the day: A jug of wine should last a long time.

9. Keep a Positive Mental Outlook
There's a definitive connection between living well and healthfully and having a cheerful outlook on life.
Thought for the day: You can't be unhappy when you're smiling or singing.

10. Choose Your Parents Well
The link between genetics and health is a powerful one. But just because one or both of your parents died young in ill health doesn't mean you cannot counteract the genetic pool handed you. Thought for the day: Follow these basic tips for healthy living and you can better control your own destiny

2) Tuning Internet Speed by changing DNS Resolution
Fine tune Internet access speed: Tip on improving DNS resolution.
Internet browsing is such an exciting and easy experience now a days that we have almost forgotten the amount of work that goes behind the scene to make this all happen. We only feel bad if we can't find something easily or have to wait for a long time (I have heard many people saying WWW stands for world wide wait not too long ago!!!) Well with changes in technology and falling prices we have far better hardware and software to do this job but fruits of fine tuning have always been great and would continue to remain so. One of the things that should happen before Internet connection would go through is DNS resolution.DNS stands for Domain Name Service. Even though XP does a fine job of handling DNS resolution, you may still gain by increase the DNS Cache size. To do this you would have to add following entries in registry. Save what is written below in say "dnstuning.reg" file and import it in REGISTRY but opening registry editor and going to IMPORT option from top menu.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dnscache\Parameters]
"CacheHashTableBucketSize"=dword:00000001
"CacheHashTableSize"=dword:00000180
"MaxCacheEntryTtlLimit"=dword:0000fa00
"MaxSOACacheEntryTtlLimit"=dword:0000012d

g. Click on "properties"

You should now be on a screen with something titled "Local Area Connection", or something close to that, and, if you have a network hooked up, all of your other networks.

h. Right click on "Local Area Connection" and click "properties"
i. Double-click on the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" from the list under the "General" tab
j. Click on "Use the following IP address" under the "General" tab
k. Create an IP address (It doesn't matter what it is. I just type 1 and 2 until i fill the area up).
l. Press "Tab" and it should automatically fill in the "Subnet Mask" section with default numbers.
m. Hit the "Ok" button here
n. Hit the "Ok" button again

You should now be back to the "Local Area Connection" screen.

o. Right-click back on "Local Area Connection" and go to properties again.
p. Go back to the "TCP/IP" settings
q. This time, select "Obtain an IP address automatically"

10) BIOS backdoor passwords
The first attempt to bypass a BIOS password is to try on of these standard manufacturer's backdoor passwords:
AWARD BIOS
AWARD SW, AWARD_SW, Award SW, AWARD PW, _award, awkward, J64, j256, j262, j332, j322, 01322222, 589589, 589721, 595595, 598598, HLT, SER, SKY_FOX, aLLy, aLLY, Condo, CONCAT, TTPTHA, aPAf, HLT, KDD, ZBAAACA, ZAAADA, ZJAAADC, djonet,AMI BIOS
AMI, A.M.I., AMI SW, AMI_SW, BIOS, PASSWORD, HEWITT RAND, Oder
Other passwords you may try (for AMI/AWARD or other BIOSes)
LKWPETER, lkwpeter, BIOSTAR, biostar, BIOSSTAR, biosstar, ALFAROME, Syxz, Wodj
Note that the key associated to "_" in the US keyboard corresponds to "?" in some European keyboards (such as Italian and German ones), so -- for example -- you should type AWARD?SW when using those keyboards. Also remember that passwords are Case Sensitive. The last two passwords in the AWARD BIOS list are in Russian.

At command prompt type debug
you will get a - prompt where you can type the following ( means hit enter, not type enter*)

A
MOV AX,0
MOV AX,CX
OUT 70,AL
MOV AX,0
OUT 71,AL
INC CX
CMP CX,100
JB 103
INT 20
just hit enter on this line
G
Q .

11) BIOS PASSWORD
This is a password hack but it clears the BIOS such that the next time you start the PC, the CMOS does not ask for any password. Now if you are able to bring the DOS prompt up, then you will be able to change the BIOS setting to the default. To clear the CMOS do the following:
Get DOS prompt and type:
DEBUG hit enter
-o 70 2e hit enter
-o 71 ff hit enter
-q hit enter
exit hit enter
Restart the computer. It works on most versions of the AWARD BIOS.

When you turn on the host machine, enter the CMOS setup menu (usually you have to press F2, or DEL, or CTRL+ALT+S during the boot sequence) and go to STANDARD CMOS SETUP, and set the channel to which you have put the hard disk as TYPE=Auto, MODE=AUTO, then SAVE & EXIT SETUP. Now you have access to the hard disk.

12) Hiding folder
to hide the folder click on it(single) then press F2(for rename).
now hold ALT key and pres 0160 then hit the enter. now right clicl on tht folder go to properties -go to customize -> click on change icon -> scoll among the icons and u can find a blank space for icon ->selct it.so it will done. To make it more effective right click on it go to properties set artributes to hidden.

13) Clearing the Documents Menu Automatically
The Documents Menu displays the last file and programs you used. You can clear item manually but only through editing
the Registry can you turn this off automatically. This can be useful on computers that are used by multiple people.
The same settings can be also used in NT 4.0

Give it the value of C:\RECYCLED

Set your Recycle bin to Automatically delete files

Log off and back on again.

Your Documents Menu should now be blank. This will be for all subsequent users who logon as well.

14) Speed up ur PC

On Right side:right click "menu show delay",make it 80.

16) Bypassing Word Verification for links
You may get irritated while sending a link in your friends scrapbook.
You can bypass this word verification while sending links by this trick.
The simple logic is you make the link 'dead'.
All you have to do is to just change http to hTTp (two capital T's) and www to wWw.
Now the link will be dead and bypass the word verification.
